• Keeping the Chief Engineer informed on any matter that affects the engine department.
• Being fully aware of the need to make risk analysis a part of the daily routine. Working with, demonstrating, and encouraging all personnel to enforce safety awareness at all times.
• Executing correctly and promptly the Chief Engineer's orders and reporting to that effect.
• Consulting daily with the Chief Engineer concerning the work necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of the engine department and taking part in the shipboard management meetings.
• Supervising all engine staff, workshop, stores, maintenance and repairs.
• Maintaining records of engine room staff’s work done, rest and overtime hours when applicable.
• Ensuring cleanliness and safe practices within the spaces allocated to the engine department.
• Ensuring engine room staff wears appropriate PPE(personnel protective equipment) suited to the tasks during work in the engine room, and follows safe practices, discipline and good housekeeping.
• Ensuring correct, safe and periodical control and maintenance of electrical equipment and installation.
• Assisting Chief Engineer in training of junior officers, cadets and crew in all aspects of engine room operation, best practices, safety, and pollution prevention.
• Recording the incineration of plastics, waste materials, and shore disposal of plastic clinker.
• Daily upkeep of Planned Maintenance System.
• Recording the incineration of plastics, waste materials, and shore disposal of plastic clinker in Garbage Log (in co-operation with Chief Officer).
• Routinely testing all alarms and trips according to the planned maintenance system for IGS(inert gas systems) and the calibration of the IGS fixed oxygen analyzer in co-operation with Chief Officer.
• Ensuring the spares and stores are updated regularly in the Planned Maintenance System.
• Ensuring that lubrication of engine room equipment is carried out as per the planned maintenance schedule.
• Maintaining machinery as per the Planned Maintenance System.
• Ensuring that the bilge overboard valve is locked shut at all times except when pumping bilges, and that the key is returned to the Chief Engineer after every overboard pumping operation.
• Familiarizing self with duties of the next senior rank(chief engineer).
• Performing any other duties as required by the Master or Chief Engineer.

Profile Summary:
Responsible for, performing duties, as directed by the 1st Engineer. Duties include:
• Learning the safety procedures on board the vessel and complete the Welcome on Board process as soon as possible.
• Learning the duties and responsibilities of the Wiper and Oiler under the supervision of the Engineering officers using the engine rating competencies as a guide and to be completed within 3 months from embarkation.
• Complying with all safety procedures and carrying out all work safely. Complete all safety related competencies for the engine rating rank within the first 3 months of the first tour of duty.

• Participating in emergency drills, safety exercises and meetings.
• Performing the duties outlined in the Muster List and following instructions by the Master or Emergency Party Leader.
