The Diesel electric Propulsion vessels are namely the Cristal, the Makalu and the Ben Nevis, all built at Havyard Norway.

The Cristal comprised of 690V, unidirectional, variable speed motors with hydraulic variable pitch propeller and hydraulic azimuth control. Electric supply to the drive motors being of the AFE (Active Front End) Type. Twin screw.

The Makalu and Ben Nevis comprised of 690V reversible variable speed motors with solenoid operated external braking system to slowdown and reverse the motors. The azimuth propellers were of the fixed pitch type, each steered by 4 off electric motors. Twin screw

The new building and yard delivery experience was at HDW Germany ship yard, on behalf of my then employers Dole Fresh fruit Intl. The 2 open top (Hatchless) 2023 TEU Reefer Container vessels, (Yard 342 and 343), were later named the Dole Chile and the Dole Colombia.

The project included plan approval of systems and drawings along with machinery selection for about six months at San Jose - Costa Rica and at Kiel in Germany.

Thereafter shipyard supervision during construction, which included shop tests of 6 x 3850kw, and 4 x 2820kw, generators 6600 Volts.

The Yard supervision involved tank inspections and pressure tests, Flushing and pressure tests of all pipe systems, Accepting test protocols of aux systems and machinery at dock trials, followed by full and final sea trials of all equipment and the ME performance tests, till final delivery of the vessels. During that period, the planned maintenance system and spare parts inventory program with data entry was also setup. THE PMS system was the Amos4Win software using 'Sybase' as the database engine.

After delivery of the vessels was sailing on the same from South and Central America to Port Everglades in Florida, voyage terminating at Wilmington Delaware. These voyages were made from 2000 until 2012

In addition to the yard delivery vessels, Dole Chile & Dole Colombia, the other vessels were AHTS Shergar, Accomodation Work Barge The Beau Geste, and PSV Makalu. However was not involved in the construction or design of these vessels. Contribution was limited to operating the vessels, and to implementing modifications, to enhance reliability, and to the generation and successful closing of guarantee claims. Served on the TS Hong Kong also, (Doehle Danautic) during the guarantee period.

The vesselS, Kailash, as also the Cristal and Shergar, were on charter to Petrobras. The Makalu was on the Shell charter in Benin, and the Mana was on charter to BP and Ben Nevis on spot Charter, both of which were operating in the North sea. The other vessels i.e. Dole Colombia and the Dole Chile were High Voltage 6600 Volt vessels.
